How to Write Poetry

Step 1 to writing poetry

Many people look at what they write and consider it to be not as good as the next person. Some people have a little more practice and others have a "way with words". This does not mean that you cannot be a poet yourself. In order to write, you need to play around with styles until you find your own writing style.

If you start off saying:

Roses are Red

Violets are blue

Add something different each time, like:

Adding in your paint

Makes the perfect hue

During this phase, you and others may think that your work is not good enough, but we all have to start somewhere. My favorite book to read when I am writing poetry is the Thesaurus. It is full of ways to make yourself sound more profound and insightful.

Warning: the overuse of this book can make you sound uneducated or over-educated. People would rather read a poem with basic words that dance on the page rather than using words which make them have to pick up a dictionary every five seconds.
